ARCHITECTURAL Exhibit |   View displays of recent works by local architects. Exhibits will be available for viewing at the following locations—Park Place Mall - Saturday, September 24th—Sunday, October 2nd

CANSTRUCTION® Competition Build & Exhibit |  I CAN You CAN We All CAN be LOCAL! A project founded by the Society for Design Administration (SDA), CANSTRUCTION® competitions result in thousands of hungry people being fed, a greater awareness of the issues surrounding hunger, and the design and construction industry giving back to the communities it helps build. Hosted this year in the center court of Park Place Mall, the CANSTRUCTION® Build will kickoff early in the day on Saturday, September 24th bringing together architecture and engineering offices throughout Tucson in a competition to design and build sculptural installations using only canned food. The exhibit will be on display at Park Place Mall throughout the week. All cans of food will be donated to the Tucson Community Food Bank at the conclusion of Architecture Week!

CANSTRUCTION® Awards |  A Selection Committee will jury the CANSTRUCTION entries for awards. The CANSTRUCTION® AWARDS presentation will be held on Friday, September 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the Park Place Mall (center court). Brent L. Davis, Hon. AIA, Executive Director of AIA Southern Arizona will emcee the award presentation.

Immediately following the awards presentation, AIA members and invited guests are welcome to join us for an Architecture Week Reception sponsored by Ryan Companies at The Bamboo Club located on the south side of Park Place Mall. Refreshments provided; no host bar.

KIDSTRUCTION Tomorrow’s Designers |   KIDSTRUCTION is a design/build competition among middle school students sponsored by the Southern Arizona Chapter of the Society for Design Administration (SACSDA) as part of the AIA Southern Arizona Architecture Week events. In order to compete, teams from Tucson’s middle schools have to design and build structures based on a theme. The student entries have to be build using only business cards, toothpicks and glue and must fit on a 12” x 12” base. Entries are juried during the morning of Saturday, September 24 followed by an Awards Presentation at NOON at the Park Place Mall. Judges for the event have included representatives from the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture, the City of Tucson, the SDA local chapter and local businesses. Awards have been presented to the students by Mayor Bob Walkup and other dignitaries. Design entries will be on display in the mall through Architecture Week. The display will be dismantled on Sunday, October 2nd.

ASK-AN-ARCHITECT |   FREE architectural consultation services—What do Architects actually do? Why should I hire and Architect? How much will it cost? Ask a question related to architecture and get an answer from a registered Architect. Registered Architects will donate limited time to the public on Saturday, September 24th (9am-5pm) and on Sunday, September 25th (12pm-4pm) at Park Place Mall. Meet with an Architect to discuss residential or commercial design issues and concerns. The public is encouraged to bring ideas, thoughts and concerns along with a few sketches, site plans, photos or other materials and “Ask An Architect”.

GUIDED WALKING TOURS |   GUIDED Walking Tours by local Architects will be hosted on Saturday, October 1st. Please see the reverse side of this flyer for WALKING TOUR dates, times and locations.

BICYCLE TOUR | Architecture on Wheels 

A historical neighborhood bicycle tour. This self-guided tour starts at the Tucson Museum of Art (near the blue wall off Alexander) tours three of Tucson’s historic and most iconic downtown neighborhoods: El Presidio, Armory Park and Barrio Viejo. Maps will be provided at route starting point beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 25.

If preferred, at 9:00 a.m. the Living Streets Alliance will lead a guided group tour. The tour will move at a leisurely pace along a roughly 3 mile route. During the tour, we’ll hear more about each of the featured buildings from our very own, in person “architect on wheels”. Please RSVP to info@livingstreetsalliance.org with the title “Arch on Wheels” in the subject line and we’ll bring along goodies for you and yours!    REMEMBER to bring a hat and water—we are in the desert, after all.


19th ANNUAL Architecture + Home TOUR |

Sunday, October 2nd from 10:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m. featuring a selection of local architectural and residential projects throughout Tucson. The 2011 tour theme is “live LOCAL design LOCAL” which features local architectural and residential projects that are varied and represent the unique architectural designs for the diverse lifestyles of Tucsonans. A portion of the proceeds from the $20 tickets will aide Habitat for Humanity Tucson to assist a local family in home ownership. Home Tour Ticket Outlets and Order Information HERE. 

Architecture + Home TOUR tickets may also be purchased online at www.aiasouthernarizona.org. The deadline for ordering tickets online for mailed delivery is Sunday, September 25, 2011. Tickets purchased online AFTER September 25th must be picked up prior to Friday, September 30th at NOON from the AIA Southern Arizona office located at 1001 N. Alvernon Way, Suite 101 (nearest major intersection Speedway & Alvernon—within first building to the south of McDonalds Tucson, AZ 85711). A $3.00 handling fee is added to ONLINE Orders. Once an order is submitted, a ticket sales representative will fulfill your order and may need to contact you with further questions or ticket options.
